OEE CALCULATION IN THE PACKAGING SECTOR: UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO MAKE THIS PERFORMANCE INDICATOR

The OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) indicator is the metric most used by the industry to measure the efficiency of equipment on a production line, including equipment in the packaging sector.

In this way, possible improvements are identified in the operational part, in the entire production line.

Next, understand what the OEE performance indicator is and how it can be applied to measure the efficiency of packaging in your industry.

How does the OEE performance indicator works

The OEE performance indicator combines three performance indicators: availability, performance and quality.

This indicator has an impact on gains, costs and future investments that reflect on efficiency as a whole.

In industrial plants that have lines of equipment for packaging, OEE monitoring is gaining even more attention from managers as it offers a better view of operations and, consequently, data-based decision making.

How to use OEE in the packaging industry

If you still don’t track the efficiency of your production line with OEE, we’ll help you.

First, you need to understand what each index that makes up the metric means.

Availability is time related, ie operating time and planned time.

Performance measures the production of packets per minute, between actual and planned.

Quality, on the other hand, is focused on the packages delivered to the next stage, related to the production of packages per real minute and the operating time.

Here’s how the calculation is actually done:

AVAILABILITY = Operating time

Planned time

PERFORMANCE = BPM (bags per minute) Actual

BPM (bags per minute) Planned

QUALITY = Bags delivered in the next step

(Real BPM X Operating Time)

How to calculate OEE:

OEE = Availability x Performance x Quality

The higher the OEE percentage, the more efficient the packaging industry equipment will perform.

An increase in OEE means more efficient production, and reveals that inefficiencies have decreased, minimizing costs and waste, and maximizing efficiency and results.

Excessive downtime, waste of products, quality of operational labor and maintenance are the most analyzed points with this calculation.

Bearing in mind that they can suffer consequences for operations that precede packaging, such as product feeding failures.

Aiding technologies improves OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)

Remote equipment monitoring software solutions, integrated with the IoT, allow this direct monitoring, with productive data from machines that assist in the decision-making process.

Indumak supports investments in technology in favor of the integration of solutions to improve processes and performance.

But be careful with the results of this calculation: there is no ideal number, as it depends on several steps involved. You will have to follow your own evolution, without comparing with other industries. Invest in analytics!
