The advantages of flexible packaging in food preservation

Reducing food waste is one of the characteristics and one of the benefits obtained by the consumer when choosing products wrapped in flexible packaging. Undoubtedly, educating and changing consumption behavior to avoid the production of food waste are attitudes totally linked to packaging.

For this, it is necessary to make society aware of the advantages of flexible packaging and the gains they bring to food preservation, protecting correctly and for longer from logistics to storage, whether on the supermarket shelf or in the consumer’s home.

The flexible packaging role against food waste

We believe that many consumers do not recognize that packaging brings with it characteristics that may be totally lost when unpacking products, reducing shelf life, and it is for this purpose that Indumak is concerned with providing this information.

Pet food is a beautiful example of this. In addition to preserving industrialized feed, the packaging for animal nutrition serves to assist or maintain the conservation processes it needs to be attractive to the animal. When opening the package, some characteristics may be lost, such as flavor, color, aroma and texture. Keeping the product in the packaging, closed and protected, will guarantee more quality, maintaining the product’s properties for a longer time.

In parallel, we know that there is a concern with the consumption of plastic, which can be recycled in 85%, generating a much less impact than the waste of food. In addition to enabling easy adjustment of the packaging size, which can be purchased in the correct proportion and avoiding excess.

As the pandemic is increasing the demand for flexible packaging

In the time of coronavirus, the fractionated models of flexible packaging had increased demand. More than ever, care for consumers’ health and hygiene comes first when it comes to factors that influence the moment of purchase decision. After the pandemic, this criteria may lose some relevance, but only one or two positions on the scale only. The consumer changed his assessment a lot when choosing the product, prioritizing his health as never before seen.

In this sense, even the issue of reusing bottles, for example, has lost strength (at least temporarily), due to the risk of contagion due to product handling being avoided. The consumer, again prioritizing his health, prefers to buy a product packaged in the industry and dispose of this packaging (correctly) avoiding any risk of contagion himself or others in this process.
