Types of plastic and welding techniques for each of them

Commonly used on metals, but widely used on plastics as well, sealing is a process in which two or more pieces are fused together by means of heat, pressure, or forming a joint as the pieces cool.

Each type of plastic requires the use of specific processes and techniques for welding, as well as knowledge of film types and their possible welding configurations. Below, we explain how the main methods for plastic welding work.

Welding methods according to types of plastic

Bonding methods for plastics can be separated into external or internal heating methods, depending on the exact process used.

Using a hot plate to apply thermal heat directly to plastics means this method can be used even in highly complex welds. Even curved joints can be welded, and hot plate welding has a very short cycle time. This is a method that often cannot be used on particularly thin materials, and there are high operating costs.

The main types of plastic materials and their acronyms

Plastic welding is the process of creating a molecular bond between two compatible thermoplastics that provides superior strength and reduces cycle times. See what types of plastics are currently used:

  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)
  • High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
  • Polyethylene Vinyl Chloride (PVC)
  • Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Bi-oriented Polypropylene (BOPP)

There are three main steps to any weld: pressing, heating and cooling. Plastic welding processes are mainly differentiated by their heating methods.

The application of force and tolerances for cooling are mechanical considerations that can vary from machine to machine within the general process category.

There are several possibilities for welding configuration, depending on the type of plastic:
